Two days, 180 miles, Biloxi to New Orleans and back, with Jesse and two NCCC volunteers, Meredith and Liz. Perfect weather – high of 73°, sunny, light wind. Yes, you can get a (mild) sunburn in November in Mississippi, if you’re on the road for 8 hours a day. Pictures below and the full set here.
Saturday
Left Biloxi at 7:45 am. To Wachovia and then Jesse’s car to look for his ID (no luck). East Railroad St. to downtown Gulfport; 15th street to Old Pass Rd, then West Railroad and 2nd Street to Pass Christian.
Cross the Bay St. Louis bridge to meet Meredith and Liz. Stop at the Mockingbird Cafe, then at LESM to fix Liz’s tire. Leave Bay St. Louis around 11:30. We’ll be on Highway 90 all the way to New Orleans.
Cross the state line into Louisiana. From here it’s miles of two-lane road, bridges, lakes, and wetlands.
Enter East New Orleans later than planned, around sunset.
Sunday
Sleep on couches and wake for breakfast at Slim Goodies around 8:00. On the road around 9:30. Slow pace today but the roads out of New Orleans are quiet.
Back in the wetlands. Sunny, warm, and long stretches of open road. Lunch at Crazy Al’s, which lived up to its name. Past Fort Pike and Lake Pontchartrain.
Cross the Mississippi state line around 3:30. Detour into Pearlington and then another hour and a half into Bay St. Louis, where we leave Meredith and Liz.
Sunset as we cross the Bay St. Louis bridge into Pass Christian. Then it’s night riding along empty streets through the cool fall air until we arrive home.
Quite a distance! And not even any mention of sore muscles and saddle pain!
