Rebuilding Resiliency

The devastation of the city of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina was a disaster with both natural and man-made causes. To rebuild as a resilient city, New Orleans needs a multi-layered system of protection. In the low-lying Broadmoor neighborhood, a resilient public building like a school could become an important community facility in times of crisis. Key spaces like classrooms and offices are elevated to the second floor, while the ground-level courtyards and open-air classrooms can get wet and dry out again. Bio-swales and subtle changes in elevation manage stormwater on-site.
